We hand-author beach details from on-the-ground sources. The city dataset (Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Beach Park) is an official inventory that can lag reality. Worth a cross-check on arrival.
We list lifeguards here. City inventory may be stale — verify with posted tower hours on arrival.
Drinking-water flags vary across datasets and the fountains themselves can be out of service. Refill bottles before you leave home if it matters.
Shade can mean tree canopy, structures, or both. Trees grow and structures get removed — confirm visually.

Kahanamoku Lagoon is a fully enclosed saltwater swim lagoon — no current, no chop, sand bottom. The adjacent ocean beach is also reef-sheltered and calmer than central Waikīkī. The combination is the strongest pick on Oʻahu for kids under five who want both "pool" and "ocean" experiences in one stop.
Officially public, practically resort-adjacent. Walk in from Fort DeRussy Beach Park or from the public access path next to the Hilton — the resort cannot keep you out. Bring your own everything; concessions are hotel-priced.
Lifeguarded by Hilton (lagoon) and the City (ocean side). The lagoon is shallow but kids can still get in over their heads near the center — adults stay close. Watch for paddleboat traffic.
This beach sits in the Tsunami Evacuation Zone per Hawai‘i Statewide GIS. If sirens sound or shaking is felt, move inland and uphill immediately. Hawai‘i Emergency Management →
Hotel valet is expensive. The cheapest play is the Ala Moana Center lot or Fort DeRussy ($0-3/hr depending) and walk in 10 minutes.
Public restrooms at Fort DeRussy beach park; cleaner facilities inside the Hilton concourse if you patronize.
Several large trees ring the lagoon. Beach umbrellas rentable hotel-side.
Early morning (7-9 AM) is calmest and least crowded. Lagoon water tends to be cleanest first thing.
Accessibility: Hotel-side paved paths; sand wheelchair available from Hilton beach services.
Two enclosed swim ponds along Waikīkī, walled off from the surf — the safest Waikīkī option for non-swimmers.
Reef-sheltered shoreline with a protected swim lagoon on Magic Island — the calmest big-beach option in town.
Diamond Head-end of Waikīkī, less crowded than central Waikīkī, with a small reef-protected swim area.
